My play, like two earlier ones of mine, Copenhagen and Democracy, is based on the historical record, but perhaps rather more freely than they were.

Reinhardt himself, elusive and unforthcoming as his associates often found him, was in his letters and other writings immensely articulate, eloquent, sophisticated, and prolific. Most of the ideas that he expresses in the play are drawn from what he wrote, but I have not even begun to do justice to the depth of his intelligence or the breadth of his culture. The external events of his life - his difficulties with local philistines and anti-Semites, the attacks on his house (and on the Prince Archbishop's), his expropriation and exile - are drawn from the record. And from the terrace of Leopoldskron you can indeed see Obersalzberg, above Berchtesgaden on the other side of the German frontier, where Hitler and other Nazi leaders had their villas.
